Step 1: Check track-to-door clearance

Stand next to each vertical track, with the door closed. Look at the gap between the track edge and the door panel. You’re looking for:

  • A consistent gap from top to bottom (correct)
  • A gap that widens as you move up the track (vertical track has shifted outward)
  • A gap that narrows as you move up the track (vertical track has shifted inward)
  • No visible gap at all (track is touching the panel - problem)

If the gap changes noticeably from top to bottom, the track is leaning. That’s alignment issue #1.

Step 2: Check horizontal track level

Now look at the horizontal portion of the track that runs back along the ceiling. A level placed on top of the track should read:

  • Level or slightly sloped DOWNWARD toward the back (correct - about 1 inch of drop per foot of horizontal run)
  • Level with no drop (track has been pushed up over time)
  • Excessive drop (track has sagged at the far end)

The downward slope is intentional - it helps the door’s weight pull it smoothly into the horizontal position. Too much or too little slope and the door doesn’t sit right when fully open.

Step 3: Compare left and right track heights

With the door fully open, the two horizontal tracks should be the same height above the floor, give or take 1/4 inch. Measure from the floor to the underside of each track at the same distance back from the opening.

If one side is more than 1/2 inch higher than the other, the door is racking. You’ll usually already have noticed this as uneven wear on one side’s rollers or an uneven gap at the bottom of the door when closed.

Step 4: Run the door and watch the rollers

Open the opener emergency release and operate the door by hand. Watch each roller as it travels up the track. You’re looking for:

  • Smooth rolling (correct)
  • Rollers dragging along the track edge (rubbing noise, black residue)
  • Rollers jumping or clicking at specific points (localized track damage)

  5. Verify alignment with your level and eye-check before anything is re-tightened
  6. Re-tighten bolts progressively in a crisscross pattern, not one at a time
  7. Run the door by hand through 2-3 cycles before reconnecting the opener
  8. Reconnect the opener and cycle the door while listening for new sounds
