A garage door is the biggest moving object in most homes. A double-wide sectional door weighs 300 to 400 pounds, stores enough energy in its springs to cause serious injury, and sits above where your kids run in and out every day. And yet, almost nobody tests whether its safety systems are actually working. Why Safety Inspections Matter

Modern garage doors have several layered safety systems: the torsion spring, cables, auto-reverse, photo eye, and manual release. Each one is supposed to prevent a specific kind of accident. The trouble is that all of them degrade silently. A cable starts fraying years before it snaps. A photo eye drifts out of alignment and gets bypassed with a zip tie. An auto-reverse stops working and nobody notices until the day it fails to reverse on a child’s foot.

The 5 Safety Tests

Test 1: The Auto-Reverse Test (The Most Important One)

The auto-reverse feature is what prevents the door from crushing anything underneath it. Every residential garage door opener sold in Canada since 1993 must have it. The test is simple.

How to test:

  1. Raise the door to the fully open position.
  2. Place a solid object — a 2x4 flat on the ground works perfectly, or a wrapped roll of paper towels if you don’t have lumber — directly in the path of the closing door.
  3. Press the close button.
  4. Watch what happens when the door touches the object.

What should happen: The door should stop immediately and reverse direction within 2 seconds.

What should NOT happen: The door should not continue pressing down, should not stop and stay put, and should not only reverse after you’ve heard the motor straining.

If the test fails: Do not keep using the door until it’s fixed. This is a genuinely dangerous failure. Most of the time the issue is a force setting that’s too high or a motor that’s lost its safety calibration. Sometimes it’s a failing logic board. Either way, call a technician.

Test 2: The Photo Eye Test

The photo eye is a pair of sensors mounted about 6 inches above the floor on either side of the door. They send a beam across the opening. If anything breaks the beam while the door is closing, the door should stop and reverse immediately. This is what prevents the door from closing on a child or a pet running underneath.

How to test:

  1. Raise the door to the fully open position.
  2. Press the close button.
  3. As the door starts moving down, wave your arm, a broom handle, or any long object through the path of the photo eye beam (at ankle height).
  4. Watch the door.

What should happen: The door should stop and reverse within a fraction of a second. It should also sound an alarm on most modern openers.

What should NOT happen: The door should not continue closing. It should not only react when the obstruction blocks the beam for multiple seconds.

If the test fails: Check for physical obstructions, dirty lenses, or misalignment. A slightly off-angle photo eye is the most common cause of failure. Wipe both lenses clean with a soft cloth and re-test. If it still fails, the photo eye assembly itself may need replacement.

Test 3: The Manual Balance Test

This test tells you whether your torsion spring is still doing its job. A properly balanced door — one whose spring is carrying the door’s weight correctly — will stay put when lifted manually. An unbalanced door points to a spring that’s losing its strength, which puts extra load on the opener and increases the risk of the spring failing catastrophically.

How to test:

  1. Close the door.
  2. Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the opener.
  3. Lift the door manually to about waist height.
  4. Let go gently.

What should happen: The door should stay roughly where you left it, or drift slowly in one direction.

What should NOT happen: The door should not slam down to the ground. It should not fly up on its own. Both indicate a spring problem.

Test 4: The Cable Inspection

Cables run from the bottom of the door up to a drum near the torsion spring. They carry the weight of the door and can snap violently when they fail, often at the most stressed moment — during operation with the door halfway open. A snapped cable can cause the door to drop hard, or to hang at an angle, or can whip across the garage.

How to inspect:

  1. With the door closed, look at each lift cable from the bottom bracket up to the drum at the top.
  2. Focus on the lower portion of the cable, where it wraps around the bottom bracket.
  3. Look for: fraying, broken strands, rust, kinks, and any “bird nest” where the wire has unwound on itself.

What you’re looking for: Healthy cables look uniform and clean. Problem cables show fraying strands or visible rust streaks.

If you find damage: Stop using the door. A damaged cable is one cycle away from snapping. Replacement is not a DIY job because it requires releasing spring tension safely. Call for garage door repair immediately.

Test 5: The Emergency Release Test

The red cord hanging from your opener is the emergency release. It lets you operate the door manually if the power goes out or the opener fails. The test is to confirm that it still works — because a jammed release cord is a problem you want to know about before the power goes out.

How to test:

  1. Close the door.
  2. Pull the red emergency release cord straight down. You should feel the trolley click free from the opener.
  3. Try lifting the door by hand. It should move freely without the opener driving it.
  4. Re-engage the opener: with the door closed, pull the cord toward the door (or cycle the opener once; it should automatically re-engage).

What should happen: Both disengage and re-engage should be smooth and click into place firmly.

What should NOT happen: The cord should not be stuck, frozen, or stiff. The trolley should not re-engage on its own without input.

If the test fails: Usually this is dirt, lack of lubrication in the release mechanism, or a damaged trolley. A technician can replace or service the part in under an hour.

What to Do If a Test Fails

Different failures have different levels of urgency:

  • Auto-reverse or photo eye failure: Stop using the door. These are life-safety issues.
  • Unbalanced door: Stop using the door. Spring replacement needed before continued use.
  • Damaged cables: Stop using the door. Failure can be violent.
  • Sticky emergency release: Can keep using the door temporarily, but fix before the next power outage.

Any failure is worth a same-day call. Garage doors rarely fail in small ways — when they go, they tend to go badly.
